The Problem in a Nutshell

You want to be healthy and strong as you age- you don't want to have to worry about getting the groceries into the car, getting up the stairs without stopping for breath, or wait for someone to help you get out of a chair. You want enough energy to play with the grandkids, to live an active social life, and to stay independent as long as you can.

But every year, things seem to be going downhill. It starts with little annoyances- you're putting on a few pounds, joints start to ache occasionally, you have trouble sleeping...

... and then before you know it, you're on meds for arthritis, high blood pressure, cholesterol, heartburn, low back pain- and then more meds to handle side-effects from the first meds, and so on and so on.

And the doctors aren't really helping: all they seem to be able to do is give you more pills, because that's what they've been taught and incentivized to do.

However, all of these conditions and more- diabetes, depression, arthritis, etc.- have a common cause: muscle loss. Our bodies need healthy muscle, but we don't do enough to maintain it as we age. And as our muscle wastes away, we develop the above conditions, and move even less, leading to more muscle loss. It's a downward spiral.
